Review: Econobum Cloth Diaper

Not too long ago, I added four Econobum cloth diapering systems to our stash. (I took advantage of a buy one get one free sale!)  I already knew I liked covers and prefolds, so I didn’t mind expanding our stash with these. Although, I had never tried them before, so I wasn’t sure how they’d work for us.

Cute, new Econobums!

Cute, new Econobums!

These covers and prefolds (well, it’s technically a flat) are one size, so they should last us until Rissa is out of diapers. The covers aren’t fancy, but I bought a few with colored trim. Otherwise they are completely white. I have one of each offered color that I know of at this time.

The cover is a waterproof shell with a 3×3 snap system allowing you to adjust the rise as baby grows. Rissa, while long for her age, is still fitting in her cover on the lowest rise setting. She’s pretty skinny (12.5lbs but 25″ long!), but I can get the waist snug enough and everything has stayed contained thus far. She’s tested them pretty thoroughly!

She’s a wiggly model… but you can see there’s room.

She still has a fluffy butt without being super bulky. Seems more of the diaper bulk is between her legs rather than on her rump.

The prefolds have 6 layers of 100% cotton and are easy to fold. Trifold the “short” way for smaller babies and trifold the “long” way for older babies and toddlers. Lay it inside the shell and you’re good to go! No pins or fasteners needed. I was able to lay other prefolds in the same way and they worked fine. I was also able to use the prefolds inside other covers. No need to worry about keeping them all sorted and separated!

The covers also fit well over other prefolds and my other fitteds: Sandi’s from Motherease, Thirsties duo fab fitted, and my one and only Nifty Nappy.

Econobum covers are about $8 by themselves. I bought mine as a cover & 1 prefold set at about $10 each. All in all, it’s a pretty economical way to build or expand your cloth diaper stash!

The good:

  • Versatile
  • Reasonably priced
  • Easy to use
  • Should fit for the majority of diaper wearing age! (no need to buy various sized covers or various sized prefolds)

I wish they also had….

  • more designs and colors

How often do I use them?

I’ve been using them for about 3 weeks, but  I reach for them a lot for daytime use! They all need to be washed at every time it’s diaper laundry day! (Which is every 2-3 days for us)

Thanks for passing by and I appreciate your comment. Funny, how we tend to look at our children and then reflect. : )

Thanks for the review! She is skinny! W is only 3 months and a week and he is a chunk at probably over 16lbs now! He's long too at 25.5" a few weeks ago. I wonder how these would work for us! I am tempted! Well, I'm a cloth addict so that's part of it!

My first ones weren't nearly as cute, but I got them free. Now I can't resist such cute options! (Especially if they are going to be wearable through to potty learning!)
