Do you remember the first time you made French toast? I didn’t really learn how to cook many recipes growing up.
When I was a teenager, I was hanging out at my older sister’s apartment, visiting for the weekend. Instead of letting me continue to eat the same old thing for breakfast, she taught me how to make French toast.
I remember being surprised how easy it was to make, yet nervous that we didn’t measure everything exactly.
I wasn’t used to cooking enough to feel comfortable eyeballing measurements. (Even now, that makes me nervous sometimes!)
I returned home armed with a new recipe I was determined to make all by myself. I was so proud of myself, I made it any chance I got.
One winter morning, my friend Scott and I arrived at school before we knew it was cancelled. I invited him over so I could make him French toast!
I think everyone got sick of French toast for awhile.
The first time my kids tried French toast was at a restaurant while we were on vacation. They ordered French toast sticks and happily dunked them in syrup.
I couldn’t believe I hadn’t made these for my kids before! (We got stuck in a pancake rut.)
Now, it’s time for my kids to help me in the kitchen and learn how to cook breakfast! They love cracking eggs and dunking the bread is an easy task they can assist with too.

Vanilla French Toast Recipe
Vanilla French Toast Ingredients:
- 3 eggs
- ¼ cup sugar
- ⅛ cup (equivalent to 2 Tablespoons) vanilla extract
- ¼ tsp cinnamon
- 1 French Baguette sliced
Vanilla French Toast Directions:
Whisk together the eggs, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon in a bowl.
Dunk the bread slices and remove the excess batter. Sometimes I use a fork and flipper to help coat each slice, then slide the side of the flipper gently across the bread to get rid of the extra batter.
If you leave the excess, it will taste fine, but it will look like a fried egg is stuck to your toast.
Move the bread slice to a pan or skillet. Cook each side on medium heat for 1-2 minutes or until golden brown.
Serve with powdered sugar and maple syrup and enjoy! You can also experiment by serving it with a hazelnut or caramel spread and fresh fruit.
This Vanilla French Toast recipe is easy to make and tastes amazing. Create memories with your kids by teaching them how to cook this for breakfast.
