There are two different watercolor resist techniques you can use for this project. I prefer doing watercolor resist with a white crayon, but you could also try using a wax candlestick.

Littles will benefit from working on fine motor skills by holding those and the paintbrush like a pencil. Literacy too comes into play with the creation of the card’s sentiment, as well as spelling for older kids.

Color recognition is an easy tie-in for younger kids. Can they name each color? Identify the pattern of the rainbow order? Which colors aren’t in the rainbow but are in the palette (great vocab word to teach!)?

How to Make a Watercolor Resist Mother’s Day Card

Begin by folding the white cardstock paper in half or opt for a blank card. Use a white crayon to write and draw on the front of the card. It will be hard to see what you are drawing.

For the best results, make thick lines with the crayon. Tiny hands may need help with this step.

Apply watercolors to the card. The watercolor paints will repel the areas marked by the white crayon or wax, unveiling the hidden message and design.

To make a colorful Mother’s Day card, use a variety of paint colors.

During painting, delicately dab any areas where the watercolor paint gathers over the wax to prevent smudging. Be careful not to rub the wax.

Allow the paints to dry completely before writing inside the card. Your result will be a stunning watercolor resist Mother’s Day card ready for gifting!

Tips for Designing a Mother’s Day Watercolor Art Card

You can customize the front of the card any way you want from writing a message to drawing hearts, flowers, and other designs.

Put critical thinking skills to work first by asking what do they think their mom might like best with both the message and colors? Why? Really try to stretch these answers beyond
“Because I made it,” though that’s totally true too!

Let the kids get creative with their Mother’s Day card craft! What can they write that will make mom smile? Is it something simple or a whole sentence? Or maybe just an illustration? Littler kids can brainstorm ideas out loud as you chart the responses.

Challenge elementary kids to write a sentiment or poem, or look up a quote about moms using a supervised internet search (computer skills!) Or, provide a list of ones you’ve already chosen to pick from.

This is also a great opportunity for a mini-lesson on color mixing. Demonstrate various techniques to paint with watercolors- such as using simple colors one at a time or blending. But…what happens if they mix ALL the colors? Mud!

This is also a prime time to introduce kids of all ages to the color wheel. Ask, “Why do certain colors look better together?” But also stress that art means being creative, so they’re free to use any colors they want, from their favorites to their mom’s. Everyone is an artist!

Don’t want to make a traditional card? You can also leave the paper unfolded to make a pretty picture or leave more room for writing if you wish.
