Developmental Benefits of Crafting

Crafting activities nurture a wide range of developmental skills in children. These projects promote creativity and artistic expression, allowing kids to use their imagination and bring unique ideas to life.

Additionally, the tasks of tracing, painting, cutting, and gluing cultivate fine motor skills and enhance hand-eye coordination and precision.

Children manipulate various crafting materials, develop problem-solving abilities, and develop patience, ultimately building a solid foundation for future learning and growth.

Father’s Day Tie Craft Supplies

To complete this project, you’ll need a few essential craft supplies. Start with the Tie Craft Template, which you can receive by filling out the form at the end of the post.

Use paper lunch bags as your base—either regular brown bags or small colored ones to skip the painting step.

For the painting, choose craft paint in assorted colors. I recommend Apple Barrel paint for its vivid color options and quick drying time. You’ll also need cardstock paper in various colors and patterns.

You can either use colored cardstock sized for printing the tie template or any cardstock to cut out the necktie shape.

Finally, gather assorted items for decorating the shirt and tie, such as washi tape, glitter glue, and markers.

How to Make a Father’s Day Tie Craft

To make this adorable craft, paint a paper bag in your chosen color and let it dry completely. While you wait for the paint to dry, print out the tie template on your favorite color cardstock.

You can use plain colored cardstock and decorate it yourself or opt for scrapbook paper for a pre-made design—we tried both methods!

We used washi tape to add fun, angled stripes for the tie printed on blue cardstock. But feel free to get creative with markers, crayons, or stickers.

Square photo with step by step photos showing the tie template printed on blue paper. Then adding strips of washi tape across it. Then gluing the tie to the light blue painted bag. And then the finished project next to a plain brown bag and supplies.

Once your design is complete, cut out the tie. For a second option, we used purple polka dot cardstock for a tie on a green bag.

When your painted paper bag is dry, glue the tie under the bag’s flap.

Allow the kids to design the shirt and necktie freely, but if they need extra inspiration, ask them about Dad’s favorite colors or if he has a beloved shirt they can replicate.

Tips for Modifying This Project

Here are some ways to modify this project and create different variations. These tips can help if you don’t have all of the suggested materials or need to adjust for your child’s skill level.

Want a paint-free option? You can still make a creative tie by coloring the paper bags with crayons, markers, or colored pencils. Alternatively, cover the bag with construction paper and decorate it.

If you don’t have paper bags on hand, you can create the tie craft using card stock or construction paper. These materials are more manageable for younger kids and can be just as fun to decorate.

Allow the children to color in and decorate the tie themselves. They can add their own drawings and stickers or even write messages to make it truly personalized.

Add a head to the paper bag to turn it into a Dad puppet for an extra creative twist. This can make the craft even more interactive and enjoyable for younger kids.

Another option is to attach the tie to the top of the bag and use it as a custom gift bag for one of the keepsake Father’s Day gifts you’ve prepared. This adds a personal touch to any gift, whether handmade or store-bought, and makes the presentation memorable.

These modifications accommodate various skill levels and available materials and add more creative options for kids to express their love and appreciation for their fathers on this special day.
