Preschoolers and kindergartners will practice fine motor skills as they color the coffee filters with washable markers.
Elementary school age children practice their geography skills by using a world globe to try to add different continent shapes. Challenge older children to create different shapes based on the angles you can view on the globe.
Children will love spraying these coffee filters with water and watching the colors blend too.
You can also do a little science activity with them: experiment if putting specific colors next to each other creates new colors during the blending stage. While the kids wait for their coffee filter Earth to dry, they can work on these Earth Day coloring pages.
These may require additional drying time depending on how much water is sprayed on the coffee filter during the blending stage.
It’s important to protect your work surface by placing the coffee filters on top of a craft mat, parchment paper, zippered plastic bag, or even a paper plate before spraying.
These Earth Day fine motor activities are perfect to for young learners to work on while waiting for their coffee filters to dry. Older kids may appreciate reading these Earth Day puns and jokes to each other.
Once dry, you can use your homemade planet Earth to decorate your classroom or virtual school space.
You can also make a game with them and have your students try to guess which continents each student drew.
