Your guests don’t even have to know that you figured out how to make gourmet brownies from a box.
Yes, that’s right, you can make these without making them completely from scratch.
I love saving a bit of time when making party desserts so I’ll make recipes using box brownie mix like these glitter brownie pops and our 3 layer brookies.
It’s fun whipping up a semi-homemade dessert and trying different things to make box brownies look and taste like they are from the bakery.

You might be thinking, Can you add pretzels to brownie mix? And my answer is: yes, yes you can.
Now, I don’t add them or any other mix-ins with the dry brownie mix. You’ll want to add them to the top of the batter.
The sweet and salty combination is so good, plus that extra texture is so good.
Then again, I love brownie edges, don’t you? Or do you prefer the center brownies?
Patriotic Pretzel M&M Brownie Ingredients:
- 1 box brownie mix (use a large size box about 18 oz)
- Ingredients listed on box to make brownies
If you are using a homemade brownie recipe, then gather the ingredients to make your batter plus the items listed below.
- 1 cup crushed pretzels (about 1/4” or smaller) I find it easier to crush up twist pretzels like these.
- 2/3 cup quick cooking oats
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup melted butter
- 1-1/4 cup red, white, and blue m&m candies, divided 1 cup and 1/4 cup
How to Make Patriotic Pretzel M&M Brownies:
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and grease a 9×13 baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Set it aside.
If you are using a packaged brownie mix, prepare the brownie batter as directed on the box. If you are using your favorite from scratch brownie recipe, then prep the batter.
Once the batter is mixed, pour it into the prepared pan.
In a separate mixing bowl, add pretzels, oatmeal, brown sugar and butter and mix well. Then fold in 1 cup of red, white, and blue candies.
Sprinkle the pretzel candy mixture onto the brownie batter. Top with remaining M&M candies.
Bake for 30-35 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
Let the brownies cool completely before cutting into bars.
I hope you enjoy making these patriotic brownies for dessert. Using a
doctored brownie mix can be a life saver when you need to feed a crowd for 4th of July!
