As Darcy has mentioned a few times, I dabble in family history AKA genealogy. Part of that research sometimes requires me to browse old newspapers. Fortunately, Google has a bunch of them online already. While searching through some of these papers, I’ve run across some funny and sometimes scary, old ads. Like this one from 1894:
Make sure to buy some “Burnham’s Clam Bouillon” for your baby. Hell, it cures everything from measles to whooping cough to cholera. “Mothers, make a note of this. Some day you will need it.“

Considering the living conditions at that time in North America, considering the fact that many Americans were vitamin deficient, small in physical stature, had fresh food only in the summer months,even a little clam soup might rally save a small soul. Seldom are current day Americans reminded of the truth about life here only a century ago. Let this be one lesson of many, needed to remind us how good it really is.
