Halloween Mummy Rice Crispy Treats
Halloween is my favorite time of year and I love super simple ways to make cute desserts and sweet treats. These mummy rice crispy cereal treats are the perfect combination of both of those things.
Even if you don’t have time to whip up a batch, it’s still really easy to decorate store bought rice krispie treats to look like mummies.
Can Rice Crispy Treats be Made Ahead?
I think rice krispie treats taste the best on the day they are made, but that’s not always practical. If you are making them ahead for a party, you have a couple options.
You can make and store a few batches of plain rice krispie treats and then decorate closer to the party. Or, you can make and decorate the mummy crispy treats a day or two ahead of time.
How to Store Rice Crispy Treats
To store your homemade rice crispy treats properly, you’ll need to place them in an airtight food storage container.
You can either place wax paper between the layers to reduce sticking together or wrap them in plastic wrap before putting them in the container.
How Long Do Rice Crispy Treats Last?
If you are storing leftover mummy rice crispy cereal treats or making them ahead for a party, they are good for about three days in an airtight container at room temperature or a bit longer if refrigerated.
Can Rice Krispie Treats Be Frozen?
Did you know you can freeze rice krispie treats? This is great if you like making and baking sweets in batches.
If you choose this option, I’d suggest only freezing the basic rice crispy recipe, not the completely decorated mummy treats.
Freeze these treats for up to six weeks in an airtight container.
How to Keep Rice Crispy Treats Soft
If you want to keep your mummy rice crispy treats from getting hard, you’ll want to use low heat to melt the butter and marshmallows.
Using high heat may seem quicker, but they may not turn out as soft after cooling. This is why I prefer to make mine on the stove rather than in the microwave.
The best way to enjoy soft rice crispy treats is to eat them the same day they are made (seriously!). However, if they have gotten hard, try placing a slice of bread with your rice crispy treats (in a zip top bag or airtight container) overnight.
