Teach kids about the parts of a sunflower and where sunflower seeds come from with this paper plate sunflower craft. It is easy to make, inexpensive and even uses real sunflower seeds!
Like many of our fall activities for children, it can be made at home, school, daycare or even summer camp with kindergarten and elementary age children. Preschool age children can also complete this craft with some assistance.
Kids will love gluing on the sunflower seeds and maybe even eating some too (with supervision, of course!).

This paper plate sunflower craft uses just a few common craft supplies and only takes about 20 minutes to complete (plus additional drying time).
Do this craft at home, as a family, or at a school or during summer camp at home. It’s a quick and easy craft to include in an art center too.
Making these paper plate sunflowers are a fun fine motor activity for preschool and kindergarten children that provides painting, cutting and gluing practice. Pinching and grasping the sunflower seeds also helps develop fine motor skills.
Older children will also enjoy this craft that they can complete mostly independently.
These may require additional drying time depending on how thickly the paint is applied and how much glue is used for attaching the sunflower seeds.
You can protect your work surface, and make cleanup easier, by placing the paper plate and popsicle stick on a craft mat, parchment paper or newspaper before painting.
If crafting with younger children, I suggest pre-cutting the “petals” along edges of the plate as it can be harder to cut through for those newer to scissors.
When your sunflower is completely dry, you can add your painted popsicle stick and green construction paper for the leaves and stem.
If you don’t have sunflower seeds on hand, you could also use pom poms, beads, sequins or small bits of tissue paper to decorate the center of the flowers.
Paper Plate Sunflower Craft Supplies:
- 1 Plain White Paper Plate
- Sunflower Seeds
- Yellow and Green Washable Kid’s Paint
- 1 Large Popsicle Stick
- Green Construction paper
- Liquid school glue (white)
- Scissors
- Paintbrush
- Newspaper, parchment paper, or craft mat
How to Make Paper Plate Sunflowers:
Start by cutting triangle-like shapes into the wavy edges of the paper plate to create “petals”.
On a standard 9” plate, 2” petals spaced about 1.5” apart will give you about 8 petals. You can make marks on the back of the plate to use as a guide.
Place the cut flower plate on a sheet of parchment paper, craft mat or newspaper.
Apply yellow paint to your flower plate. Lightly color the entire area.
This may require additional drying time depending on how thickly the paint is applied.
Set aside to dry.
Tip: You can paint your popsicle stick and make your construction paper leaves while your plate dries to save on time.
While your flower plate is drying, apply green paint to the popsicle stick.
Set aside to dry.
If you would like to add leaves, cut leaf-shapes out of green construction paper to be added once your popsicle stick dries.
Once your flower plate is dry, now it is time to decorate the center!
Use your liquid glue to attach the sunflower seeds to the center of the painted flower plate.
Again, depending on how much glue is used, additional drying time may be needed.
Set aside to dry.
Once the flower plate and popsicle stick are completely dry, glue the popsicle stick to the back of the flower plate.
Allow to dry.
Lastly, if you made leaves, attach them to the popsicle stick with liquid glue.
Allow to fully dry.
Now you have a lovely paper plate sunflower!
