Why Do Pots of Gold Symbolize Saint Patrick’s Day?

Pots of gold are synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day due to the rich Irish folklore surrounding leprechauns.

According to legend, leprechauns, who are mischievous expert cobblers, stash their earnings in pots hidden at the end of rainbows.

Seeking these elusive treasures has become a captivating element of St. Patrick’s Day, symbolizing luck, prosperity, and the enchanting mystery of the Irish cultural heritage.

This legend deeply ingrains the pot of gold in the celebrations, making crafts and decorations themed around it a fun way to engage with the holiday’s traditions.

Pot of Gold Craft Supplies

To bring the enchanting pot of gold craft to life, you’ll need a handful of simple yet colorful materials.

Start with our free Pot of Gold Craft Template (available using the form near the end of this post), ensuring a perfect base for your creation.

Cauldron pot shape printed out on white paper laying on top of black paper and rainbow colors fanned out. Circle punch, glue stick, and scissors along the bottom.

Gather construction paper in vibrant rainbow colors, along with black paper for the pot itself. Cotton balls will transform into a fluffy cloud at the top of the rainbow.

When putting together the pieces, a glue stick should do the trick for paper bonding. But for a stronger hold, especially for the cotton ball cloud, it’s best to opt for tacky craft glue.

Scissors are a must for cutting shapes, and a hole punch (3/4 inch circle punch works well, though larger sizes are also okay) will help create those shiny gold coins.

If you don’t have a hole punch, cutting the coins by hand is a fine alternative.

How to Make a Pot of Gold Craft

Print the pot of gold craft template (accessible for free by completing the form at the end of this post) and cut out the pot. Trace it onto black paper and then cut it out.

Alternatively, you can sketch or create a large semi-circle shape by hand to serve as the pot.

Construction paper in rainbow colors cut into one inch wide strips and laying next to pot cut out of black paper. Red piece of paper laying along ruler showing it was trimmed down to be six inches long.

Create strips of paper, each about 1 inch wide and 6 inches long, to form a rainbow in the order of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple.

Select a background paper like light blue, light green, or white. Arrange the paper strips vertically in rainbow order at the center of the paper and secure them with glue.

Position the black pot over the bottom of the rainbow and affix it with glue. Take a small cluster of cotton balls and glue them, overlapping the top of the rainbow, to form a cloud.

Utilize a hole punch to create yellow circles for the gold coins. I used a 3/4 inch circle punch, but a larger one can also work. Alternatively, you can cut out your own circles.

Glue the yellow paper coins along the top of the pot, allowing some to overlap and a few to be placed along the bottom of the black pot as if they have spilled onto the ground.

Plus, arranging colorful paper strips in rainbow order boosts color recognition skills, aiding children in identifying and differentiating between colors as they create their craft.

Following a set of instructions in a specific sequence, from printing and cutting the template to layering the rainbow strips and adding the pot at the bottom, teaches kids the importance of sequencing and following directions. These skills are crucial for successful learning across all areas of study.

The pot of gold craft offers a rich learning experience that goes beyond simple tasks and motor skills practice.
