I’ve struggled with gray hair for several years – since I was 19 years old. Going gray early, especially when you have dark hair, is tough on a woman’s self-esteem. Well, it is tough on mine and judging by the popularity of hair coloring services I am not the only one. Recently I considered growing out my gray and embracing it, but I just couldn’t handle it any longer. I made an appointment to get my hair chopped off and colored again.
Thing is, for more than 5 years I’ve been going to the same salon because I loved my stylist. That salon is a 45 minute drive from my house. I didn’t always live so far away from it, but I didn’t want to give up my hair stylist when we moved. However, with kids, gas prices, one car, income change…. I can’t afford to go to the salon as regularly or so far away.
Last year I went to Bella Lei Salon Spa in Cedarburg, Wisconsin (they also have locations in Mequon and Port Washington) for a mani-pedi before heading out to New York for the premiere screening of The Avengers at the Tribeca Film Festival. So, I thought I’d give them a try for my hair too.
Boy, did I feel like I was cheating on my previous stylist when I made my appointment though! I really bonded with my previous one. I mean, she did my hair for my wedding, we talked about my issues trying to conceive, and she kept my hair looking fabulous throughout my first pregnancy.
The woman that did my hair the other day has worked at the salon for 8 years, so I at least feel good knowing she is likely to stay if I become a regular. The place is very nice (I always am under dressed when I go though, haha). I think she did a fabulous job on my hair too. I was no help, really.
I said I wanted it short (but not long enough to pull back) and to cover up my gray that had been growing out for months. (My last cover up was out of a box too.) I mentioned that it used to be red and purple and she worked her magic. In fact, after she was done blow drying my hair she decided she wanted to touch up the color some more – so she applied more stuff to my roots, I sat for another 10 minutes or so, and received a second shampooing.
You can check out my transformation in this short video:
It’s not cheap to look this good, but I felt I needed to splurge and get a little me time enjoyment!

Thank you! It was definitely a splurge. I don't do that much these days... well not for me anyway.

Darcy! I love it! Honestly, though you were grey, I didn't think you looked 'older', but now that you've gone and updated your 'do, I can see it's made a difference. Maybe it's all the hair weight off your neck...I felt the same way, I pretty much went as short as you too, just a little longer in front though. I somehow only get to see my regular stylist once a year - and in between I just deal.

LOL and of course I left a word out of my reply...the most important work too! That word being good. It should have been in two different places it got left out.
Hopefully you knew what I meant though.

I started getting my grey when I was 19 too. I must be really weird though 'cause I always thought it was special! My cousin was always after me to color it...but nope. Not gonna happen.
I think your hair looked before you had it done...and it looked after. So really whatever makes you feel best! And of course makes the hubs happy!
You look good!

My natural color is so dark that it makes my gray stand out. It sucked being called out on a few strands that popped up during high school. It was hard to deny in college though.
Thanks! Hubby said the same about how it looked before/after :)
