Butterfly Suncatcher Craft Supplies

You’ll only need a few simple materials to make this butterfly suncatcher craft. First, make sure to grab our free printable butterfly template, available by filling out the form at the end of this post.

Then, collect tissue paper in various colors and cut or tear it into pieces as desired. Consider pre-cut tissue paper squares or recycle tissue paper from gifts for convenience.

You’ll also need scissors and glue to assemble your suncatcher. You can choose between liquid glue and glue sticks. I prefer the latter because they are less messy.

The disappearing purple glue sticks are particularly helpful for little ones, allowing children to see where they’ve applied the glue when placing their paper pieces.

Top image shows butterfly outline partially filled with tissue paper squares glued in a mosaic fashion. The bottom image shows a butterfly template completely covered with tissue paper in assorted colors.

Next, let them cut or tear the tissue paper into smaller bits and stick them onto the template, completely covering it.

It’s totally fine if the tissue goes over the outline. Once they finish, let the craft dry.

Finally, have the kids cut out the butterfly and display it in the window to showcase their colorful artwork!

Tips for Displaying Butterfly Tissue Paper Suncatchers

There are several ways to showcase your suncatchers beautifully. For a simple display, tape the suncatchers directly onto your window, allowing sunlight to illuminate the vibrant colors.

If you’re looking for a long-lasting decoration, consider laminating them and using removable clips to hang them up, allowing for easy swapping of designs.

Alternatively, you can hole punch the top of each suncatcher and use string to create a charming hanging decoration.

If you don’t have a laminating machine, these self-adhesive laminating sheets or clear packing tape make fantastic substitutes.
